Some words from our happy students and parents:
Some feedback and Melanie Williams, one of our amazing college counseling experts from a senior with so many great choices!
Ms. Williams, You have been beyond instrumental in helping Kamila navigate her college application process.
We are indebted to your valuable insight and guidance, Thank you so much for that! (Khurram M., April 2022)
Worry free is the place to be:
Thanks, Ingrid! You have been a god-send all along this process. We literally have been worry-free the whole way
knowing you have Preston and us so organized. Thanks for being so awesome!
(Chris R., September 2021)
From the mother of a student looking to combine interests in theater and business:

(Jill M., February 2021)
From the mother of an exceptional senior in Plano:
Thank you the good info. Alisa is excited about applying fort schools and I'm excited to enjoy this process with her as her
cheerleader... thanks to your excellent coaching! (Donna V., September 2020)
From the mother of a wonderful homeschool student who found her place in Aggie-land after working with our homeschool specialist:
I wanted to give you an update on Gracie’s college journey since you were so instrumental in helping us navigate the
waters of college applications. Gracie was admitted into every college she applied to, and she was offered generous
scholarships from a majority of those universities. The biggest news is that she received full admission into Texas A&M
University for the Fall. We have heard from many other people that this was the hardest year to get in due to the record
number of applicants (over 52,000). After lots of prayer and many pros and cons lists, she has decided to attend A&M in
the fall and pursue a degree in Wildlife and Ecology. I wanted to thank you for all of your help. I have no doubt that your
guidance helped Gracie to stand out. As a homeschool family it is hard to know how to go about applying for college. It
is quite the process. We are happy to recommend you to other homeschool families! (Kim Daugherty, February 2020)
From the father of an exceptional film student who ventured outside of Texas to find his best fit:
Wanted to let you know that Alec seems to really be thriving and enjoying DePaul so far. I know it’s early but from a
culture standpoint, the city, the kinds of kids he’s getting involved with with activities, friends, etc. I don’t think he could
be happier. When I talk to him he seems excited, happy, fully engaged in exploring new things, new people, learning about
the city, etc. He seems to be coming out of his shell a little an jumping in with getting involved and being proactive with
meeting new people. (September 2019)
From one of the mothers of our amazing students headed to UChicago in the fall (his brother previously landed a full ride to IU):
Thank you for all you have done for us. You have been an amazing help for our children and we are ecstatic that our
children were fortunate to have your assistance. I wish you the best and know you are truly gifted in this field. (June
2019)
We love siblings! Such kindness after helping launch the second child of a terrific family in Highland Village:
Thank you for working with both of my children and encouraging them to stretch and to realize their full potential in your
monthly sessions. You make a difference in everyone’s lives that you touch! With much love and admiration.
(May 2019)
The wife of a local school board member in Argyle gives warm praise for our process:
I must say you are fantastic at what you do, and thank you for all your help. (May 2019)
Our homeschool specialist, Melinda, delivers results and individualization like no one else, and gets amazing results:
Melinda helped my son organize and prioritize the items that needed to be completed for his college applications in a timely
manner. She put him in the driver’s seat and guided him to write purposeful essays; she led him through the writing
process with ease and clarity. I feel certain her method of helping him tell a story that made an memorable impression
affected the fact that he was accepted at all three schools he applied to. She also spent time discussing with him which
teachers he should ask for letters of recommendation so he could present a well rounded picture of himself with emphasis
on what universities are looking for today. Additionally, Melinda provided me with starting points for the school profile,
counselor letter, and worked with me to edit these as well as the transcript into polished pieces. The time and money spent
working with Melinda were effective and efficient. I would definitely use her again! (V. M. from Plano, April 2019)
Updates from past students make our hearts soar!:
Erika, Just wanted to give you a quick update of how everything is going. West Point is going great, it is a daily grind but it
is awesome! Here is my class picture, I will always be appreciative of the help you provided! Thank you so much!
(Yes my hair is a little long in this picture, I somehow got away with it.) Brenden Stanton, West Point (March 2019)
More praise from a student (with extra "o's!") for Awesome-Angie:
Angie, thank you sooooo much for everything you have done for me. I really appreciate how you helped me stay on track
with everything. You helped me so much in this process and made a nearly impossible task seem easy. You got me excited
about the college application process, and I needed that. Thank you so much! Abby K. (December 2018)
Angie received a wonderful handwritten card from a mother of a student when they finished their time together:
Sam and I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done for our daughter. We are extremely grateful for your time
and direction for this next season in her life. Judith H. (December 2018)
We love our clients just as much as they love us!:
Hi Ingrid. I just wanted to write you a note and let you know how much I appreciate you and all your help!! You have
been FANTASTIC, so responsive, and knowledgable. All of this was kind of overwhelming to me and your service has
helped so much! I will recommend you to everyone I know!! (October 2018)
Some humor about how helpful one set of parents found Guru counselor Sarah as she concluded her work with their son:
Andy and I feel like we need more, especially working toward National Merit. Can we send you to college with him to help
him prioritize his assignments? You have been so great for us. - Renee W., Flower Mound High School (September 2018)
Awesome praise for College App Camp which happens just three times in the summer for small groups of 12 rising seniors:
I EXTREMELY recommend the College App Camp held in the summers. Four days of learning about and
beginning the application process, had not only given me a substantial kick start, but truly gave me a direction to run with
in this seemingly lengthy and overwhelming process. The activities we completed taught me a ton about myself which
helps SO much when you have to convince a college's admissions committee of why you stand out, through your
application. I wouldn't even know where to start with applications without the personal help and revisions from Michael
and Erika at the College App Camp. Thank you so much for all of the improvement and guidance!
- Sarah P., Coppell (July 2018)
A parent of a student from Marcus High School headed to Texas Christian University with a $40,000 scholarship sent this note:
Erika, just wanted to follow up with you and say ‘thank you’. Dylan graduated last Monday night and then spent Thursday
and Friday on the TCU campus for orientation. He is ready!
Thank you for all that you do…you and your services are amazing! So many families invest in their kids sports and
extracurricular activities. When they will listen, I tell them to invest in their kids through your services. I feel that Dylan
made a good college choice and you guided him through many different options that became opportunities for him. Dylan
praises you and says he could not have done it without you! Thank you for being there with Dylan each step of the way.
You gave him confidence and empowerment through his journey.
We look forward to continuing the journey with you through Rylan and then with Ethan [rising 8th grader]. Have a great
summer! (June 2018)
A student from Guyer High School headed to Washington University St. Louis with a $134,000 scholarship sent these warm words:
I officially committed to Washington University in St. Louis!! I'm very excited for next year, I'm so so so ready to graduate.
Thank you so much for all you have done to help me obtain this wonderful opportunity. I couldn't have done it without
you!!! (April 2018)
The mother of a student headed to SMU in the fall sent us this lovely capstone to a process well-completed:
I want to thank you for everything you have done and the guidance you have given Sam. There is NO WAY we would have
made it through this process without you. (April 2018)
The father of a future accounting major at TCU (with an amazing scholarship!) wrote us:
I really want to thank you for everything!! You have been such a major influence helping her explore different options,
expand her horizons and really help her maximize her opportunities!! Dawn and I cannot thank you enough for everything
you do and the reality that you have become such an important part of Emilie’s support group! She has grown up to
become a great young lady and you really helped to shape her and prepare her for the future. Thank you so much!!
(April 2018, Edward S. Marcus High School parent)
The mother of a wonderful student who went seven for seven in her acceptances sent his this amazing note at the end of the process:
Thank you so much for all you have done for Emily over the last two years. Whether you know it or not, you have become
a part of our “family”. Your name is frequently mentioned around our dinner table. “What does Erika think about that?”
"Did you ask Erika when you should submit that?” etc. You have given Emily so much confidence in herself and in her
decision-making skills and for that we are forever grateful. (April 2018, Flower Mound High School parent)
A wonderfully successful student from Liberty Christian School gave Sarah some great words of thanks:
Hey Sarah! I just wanted to email you and thank you so much for all of your help over the past year! I’ve finally got my
college plan all together, and I wanted to tell you! I got accepted to NYU, and I decided yesterday that I’m going to go
there and possibly transfer to Boston University sophomore year since I got guaranteed transfer there! I seriously could
not have gone through this process without your guidance, so thank you so much. You’ve been the most helpful person
throughout all of this! Thank you again! Peyton J. (April 2018, Liberty Christian Student)
A mother of a student from Flower Mound High School who went nine for nine with her college applications gave us this wonderful note:
Thank you for everything. She is a completely different person from a year ago. She would not be in this place without
your guidance. (March 2018, FMHS parent)
Angie received an awesome status update from her student who went six for six!:
I just wanted to inform you that I have heard back from all six schools I applied to and have been accepted to all of
them! I decided to go to University of Colorado, I just can not pass up the opportunity and I think it will be a great fit for
me! Just wanted to update you and thank you again for all of your help. (March 2018)
The end of the process is immensely rewarding for us as we get to celebrate success and see kids step into their dreams:
I so appreciate you, everything you have done for the twins, it’s made the entire process so much more
positive and productive! (February 2018, FMHS Parent)
Warm fuzzies for Sarah from our clients at the end of a well-done process is just the best:
Thank you so much for all the help you’ve given me in these months. You have no idea how much help you’ve been.
(January 2018)
As acceptances come in and students (and parents!) take time to consider their options, we often hear words like these:
Thank you so much. We are blessed to have you.....don’t know what we would have done without you, Erika.
(January 2018)
After the Scholarship Camp we did pro bono at Lewisville High School we received this email:
We meet last Saturday at the Scholarship Camp held at Lewisville High School.
I can’t tell you enough how grateful I am for having attended the camp and for having met you. My daughter, Claire M.,
is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel… and your advice has been extremely helpful to her! It is such a
relief to know that, somehow, it will all work out for her…and for all of her friends that desperately need funds to
continue their education. Thank you for all you do! (December 2017)
A mother of a senior who worked with Toni had these glowing words after her son was accepted to all of his colleges:
Thank you so much for your help and guidance. You are a wonderful person and so good at what you do! Really
appreciate your help. (November 2017)
From a wonderful mom wanting to get her next in line:
Thank you again for all of your work and support with Jacob. He gained so much from working with you above and
beyond the college process. I would love for Katie to have the benefit of those experiences as well. (September 2017)
After a great talk at a YMSL Meeting:
I know we could have stayed there for another hour listening to all you know about the college application process and
asking questions. Everyone raved about you. I also hope you're saving a spot for my son, Patrick. He'll be a junior next
year so I'm sure we'll be wanting to start this summer, or whenever the new session begins. You are the absolute best
and I can't thank you enough! (September 2017)
One of Sarah's clients sent her a warm email before she headed off to be a Red Raider:
Hello Sarah,
I wanted to thank you for all of your help throughout the whole college application process. I appreciate all
of your advice and help with writing essays, as well as you writing a letter of recommendation for me. I
ended up at Texas Tech University, got into their Honors College and undergraduate research program, and
received several scholarships from both within and outside the university.
Thank you again for all of your guidance and assistance!
--Bridget Mann (July 2017)
One of our Aggie-bound seniors sent us these awesome compliments:
Thank you for pushing us students to think differently about our college decision!! Many of us (including me) have
struggled with going along with the crowd when it comes to deciding on college, rather than finding what is the best fit
for US. Your service helped me find the place that I belong. You taught me not to look only at where my peers were going
but to focus on where I truly want to go. Thank you for that!! (July 2017)
A rising senior who did the first session of College App Camp made us proud:
I feel like the camp went very well. When I was talking to my parents, I had a general idea of what the application
process would be like because I saw my brother go through it, but I needed to get a little push of motivation to start
doing all of it, and the camp did just that. In particular, thanks so much for the feedback on my essay, it really helped,
and I think it might be one of the best I ever wrote! (June 2017)
A senior from MHS headed to Baylor in the fall (with a great scholarship) sent us a kind note:
Thank you so much, I couldn't have done it without your guidance and passion towards helping others. Thank you for
putting so much time and effort in helping me out. If I ever find anyone that needs help, will definitely refer them to you,
and will keep in touch. (May 2017)
A senior from FMHS headed to KSU in the fall was so kind in his words of praise:
I'd like to address first that you played no small role in this process but rather a massive one. I am sure I would not have
the future I am going to have if it wasn't for your help and expertise. I do want to thank you for helping me these past
few years with not only college things but work, school, and an overall sense of what I want to do with my life. That is
truly a gift I am thankful for! I will be sure to keep in touch with updates regarding my life so you can inevitably use me
as an example to your future students! (May 2017)
A senior from FMHS who had many acceptances and options sent us this note after making his choice (on National Decision Day, no less!):
Hey Erika,
It was a long and hard decision but in the end I think Rice is the best option for me. Go Owls! I deposited last night and
will officially become a Rice owl in the fall. Now with the college process finally over, I also wanted to say thank you one
more time. I don't really know how to express the amount of gratitude I have for everything you've done with me over
the last year and a half but hopefully this comes close. My application wouldn't have been nearly as impressive without
your guidance. You were organized, readily available whenever I needed help, and insightful during every step of the
process. (May 2017)
A mother of a junior at Flower Mound High School whose student is in the middle of the college planning process sent us a happy note:
I just read Emily's application essays for the Explore Program at A&M and wow! Thank you so very much for all you did to
help her with those. I know how much you do for her each month, and I always sing your praises to my friends, but these
essays are extra-special. Thank you. Jim and I appreciate you! (May 2017)
The mother of one of our comprehensive college planning students from Marcus High School shared with us:
Oh my goodness Erika. You have been so amazing with Luke. You are worth every penny and more. So much more I
could say! We look forward to being on just as successful of a journey now with Graycen. (April 2017)
The mother of one of the students in our ten month college planning class gave us this awesome feedback:
Aimee and Erika,
Last night, I attended the Junior Meeting at Marcus High School along with about 150 other parents. Most of the parents
in the room were parents of an oldest child. Admissions Counselors from NCTC, Baylor, Hendrix College, and University of
Pittsburg answered questions in a question/answer style meeting format.
Because of Mason’s monthly class through Guru, there wasn’t a topic discussed at the meeting with which I was not
already familiar. The counselors said they would be meeting with the students in Senior Meetings at the end of
September. Because of the bootcamp class, Mason should already have most the application process complete before
these meeting ever occur.
As we left the meeting, I watched bewildered parents leave the auditorium. Many mentioned how much this process has
changed since the 30 years since they attended college. Others said they haven’t even started talking about college with
their students, and they weren’t sure where to even begin. I was so thankful that the bootcamp class has broken what
could be a overwhelming task into smaller bites.
Thanks for all you do! (April 2017)
Our awesome social media intern/college planning student gave us wonderful feedback:
Hi Mrs. Erika, I wanted to let you know that I got accepted into UT Austin and the Computer Science program! I also
wanted to say thank you for all your help. I was admitted to all the schools I applied to, and your help editing essays,
crafting resumes, and allowing me to intern helped me put my best foot forward. I'm excited and relieved that the wait is
over and thank you for helping me along the way. (March 2017)
The mother of a student who worked with Sarah on the "Apps Only" package had this to say:
Honestly he is pretty proud that he got into all the schools he applied to but one! And he REALLY loves what TAMU has to
offer!! Thanks for all your help ... We could not have done it without you! (February 2017)
The father of two boys whom we worked with back to back years gave us wonderful news via email:
Good afternoon Erika - I wanted to drop you a line to give you an update on my boys and thank you again for all of the
guidance and assistance you provided them. Andy made the Deans list her first semester at Missouri S&T and is already a
Junior after his first semester. He is loving it and having a great time. Jake received a $76k offer from Baylor, a $24k offer
from UNT and a full ride offer from Nebraska. He will be a Corn Husker next year. Again, thank you! They couldn't have
done it with out you. (January 2017)
A mother of a full service client with a son attending Coram Deo Academy:
Michael and I have loved working with you. With me working full time now there is no way I could have helped Michael
the way you have. You truly made Michael’s dreams possible and achievable. We will never be able to thank you enough.
(January 2017)
A mother of a full service client with a son attending Marcus High School:
We are thrilled for [our son]! Thank you for everything. Couldn't have done it without your guidance, Erika. It's been the
best investment. (January 2017)
A client who lives in Lantana and completed the "Apps Only" package:
I feel like I owe you a hug and BIG thank you for working with Maddie. As her acceptance letters and merit scholarship
letters have come in it has felt well worth the time she spent working with you. (December 2016)
After a presentation at the Flower Mound Public Library:
Thank you for your lecture at the library last night. I have received more effective & helpful knowledge from that short
time block than from my son's school and neighbors with kids in college! Actually, it was enlightening and reassuring of
what I already strongly feel towards. And yes, the only thing I've heard since moving to Texas in 2015 is pretty much
about GPA's, the right schools, SAT/ACTs, must declare a field of study in HS; quite opposite of what you mentioned. So,
thank you again! I feel absolutely relieved and more secure in the route we were taking with our son. (September 2016)
The mother of a student from TALH gave us this praise:
I want to thank you for all that you are doing to assist Sydney with her college application process. You are such a
knowledgable, calming force to her during this stressful time and we are so grateful! (July 2016)
The day after our College App Camp ended, we received these lovely notes:
I just wanted to thank you for the informative Camp that my son Marshall attended. He really got a lot out of it and you
sure helped him prepare for the next steps in applying for College. Can't tell you how much we appreciate your input and
your newsletters as well. Thank you so much!! (July 2016)
--------
You have been amazing at helping Max take ownership of the college application process! He now feels more empowered
to proceed on his own and more confident to do it himself! This is a huge relief for me that he is willing and able! My
daughter is a freshman this year and I hope you continue offering these services when she is ready! Thank you so much
and I look forward to staying in touch with you! (July 2016)
--------
Just wanted to say thank you for offering this class....Kaden said it was very beneficial & plans on using the tools/tricks
you provided. (July 2016)
At the conclusion of our College App Camp for THEO in Plano, we heard this:
I want to say a huge “THANK YOU” to you both for coming to THEO and guiding our students thru the college application
bootcamp. I got happy feedback from the students, and the parents that I spoke with were also pleased. One student
even told me “I am going to tell some of my other friends at THEO who will be juniors next year that they NEED to take
this!”. I think that means we need to do this again!!!
Please accept our wholehearted thanks for bringing your expertise right to our THEO door!! (June 2016)
The mother of a junior at Marcus High School sent us a wonderful note of praise:
THX for all you doing to help Sam. What a load off of us! We talk about how happy we are being Sam’s parents and not
her college prep counsel because we’ve got you! (June 2016)
The father of a mathematics student at the UNT Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science wrote us this:
"Wanted to let you know Madeline has decided to go to SMU. This would probably never been on the table if it wasn't
for you. She has received about $42k in scholarships of the $49k needed. All that will be left for us is Room and Board.
I don't know if she has told you yet but I wanted to let you know. I am sure she will tell you soon.
Thank you for all you have done." (March 2016)
The father of a computer programming student at Hebron High School wrote us this:
"Andy was accepted to every school to which he applied and has received significant scholarship offers from Missouri S&T
and UNT. We are still waiting for some supplemental offers from S&T but he has decided to attend and registers in April
for the Fall of 2016. Thank you for all of your assistance in helping him make his first choice a reality." (February 2016)
A senior student at TAMS sent us these words in a wonderful handwritten thank you note:
"I am writing this note to say thank you for all you have done for me. Yesterday I was imagining what the college
application process would have been like for me if I had never had sessions with you. I know both me and my parents
would have been so confused, and I would have been stressed out trying to figure it all out while still keeping on top of
my school work. But you made everything 100% easier. You made me not procrastinate on getting things done and
guided me perfectly. Even though I started college application stuff later than all my friends, I finished earlier than most
of them, and that would never have happened if it were not for you. Thank you so much for everything you have done
for me and will do for me in the future. Also, good luck with my little sister." (January 2016)
The father of a Flower Mound High School junior excitedly relayed this to us via email:
After meetings his son comes home "so excited and engaged!" (December 2015)
The mother of a Marcus High School senior planning to study engineering sent us these kind words:
Thank you so much for all you do. I just didn't want to miss any of the opportunities at the colleges. I have
recommended you to so many people. I truly felt that my money was well spent. (November 2015)
The mother of a Marcus High School senior in the marching band sent us these kind words:
Erika,
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your help with this process. Life is just too short to spend your child’s last
year at home fighting about what their essay should say or chasing them to complete applications when they already
have a thousand other things to do.
You will come highly recommended from me to all other parents of high school students.
I can’t wait to update you on where he decides to go.
Sarah (September 2015)

beginning the application process, had not only given me a substantial kick start, but truly gave me a direction to run with
in this seemingly lengthy and overwhelming process.

We gave a talk at the Flower Mound Library, something we try to do each cycle for our community. After the talk we heard this great news:
Erika,
I just wanted to share our good news with you about Evan. He applied to three schools OSU, OU and Arkansas and he
got accepted to all three! I truly feel just our meeting with you at the library helped him, especially the tips on writing his
essay. He totally changed his entry story when he got home!
We will definitely refer you and will check back when our daughter is at this stage of life.
Thank you,
Maria Gilbert (September 2015)

The parents of a recent "Applications Only" package senior gave us a sweet note today (September 2015) at our last meeting:
We would like to thank you for invaluable service. Applying to and preparing for college has changed immensely over the
years, and we know we would be lost right now at this crucial time had we not obtained your expertise! Thank you for a
job well done.

My daughter came home today sooo thrilled about this camp! THANK YOU so much for offering it to our kiddo’s!
Even as prepared as we think we are, there is still so much more information out there that can help us in this college
prep process.
Oh my goodness!!! You guys are miracle workers to say the least. My daughter who has been an “ostrich” with this
process for fear of failure called me on the way home and talked the entire time about all of her plans and what she
wants. You guys in just a few hours have taken her to an entirely new place of excitement instead of fear and dread! I
am GIDDY!!! Thanks so very much for being so open and friendly and encouraging as that is what I am sure broke the
ice with her! Can’t wait to see what happens the next two days! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
My daughter came home very excited after the first day of your workshop and we both already see the value in putting

Barbara Apt, the mother of a senior at Guyer High School, gave us such wonderful praise:
For any of you with college bound kids at any stage right now from middle school to high school, I highly encourage
you to meet with Erika of Guru Academic Advising. She took all the worry and unknowns about the college process off
our shoulders. Emily had amazing sessions with her where she got wonderful guidance on her applications, essays and
scholarships. Emily left each session with a clear to do list and a great sense of accomplishment. Erika takes the time
to answer every question you might have and offer her expert opinions. The best part about working with Erika is her
care and concern and really getting to know your child so she can help you make the best choices.
This service is well worth the money and I highly recommend Guru Academic Advising! (January 2015)

"Btw, thank you for always doing an amazing job when editing my essays. It's as if I'm a sculptor, and my
essays are clay models, unrecognizable as to what they actually are. Then you, the painter, save the
day by painting my lump of clay to turn it into an art masterpiece! Thank you, paint master, for always
helping my essays come to life!" (January, 2015)
